Gray. Dark, deep, impenetrable gray. It filled the sky, the sun shining behind the thick curtain and turning it a frighteningly blank shade. The fog was white, and stretching from horizon to horizon it looked like the color had been drained from the sky and into the black ocean. Arden forest was dank with the alternating mist and drizzle of the low cover. A sort of gloomy mood hovered about the place within arms reach, buzzing about one's face like an invisible cloud of gnats... although there were plenty of real ones around too. It seemed as if the day were going to be occupied by a sullen and pouty sky.
But suddenly, as if spotting something that lifted it's heart, it lifted it's fog as well.
Okay, so it wasn't quite as boring as that. It was more of a magical show. One crack of light wriggled through the clouds, wrestling to get a peek at what was walking down there on earth. It shimmered with contained energy for a moment just on the other side of the clouds, and then finally burst through in a thin watery stream of light. The beam widened and grew brighter as it forced open the door it had made, sending a long shaft of sun shooting straight into the trees of the forest, spotlighting a small, green clearing below.

crazy on a Sunday night
A lone robin swept downward through the sky, and lit upon a branch which bobbed slowly and dripped fresh raindrops under the sudden impact. He let loose a low whistle tentatively, which echoed softly through the forest. Not far away, a gray and white dog-fox lifted his head off of his paws, mist clinging to his fur and sparkling like mad in the sunbeams. He looked up at the Robin with liquid gold eyes, and the bird seemed to take this as encouragement. With a faint bob of his head, he began to twitter like mad, weaving a lovely song into the near silence. But as Riley heard a gentle crackling of leaves and scented a familiar aroma on the wind, it seemed to him to be more of a royal announcement of arrival than a mere song. He flicked his ears forward eagerly, straining his eyes in the darkness which slowly faded. A smile slowly crept across his face.
It was her.

It had been cold and rainy for the past few weeks, and he had denned up in his familiar home under a willow tree during this time. He hadn't seen this girl since the last time he'd talked to her.
Wanting to go back up to her home in the tundra, but being too terrified of going back there alone, he had asked her to go with him. "...I would protect you, I promise.." He had said the words so softly, golden eyes connecting with a beautiful twin pair, hoping that she would come along and stand by his side. "..We could look after each other, and have some amazing adventures..." He sighed contentedly, staring now into the trees where the silhouette of a figure slowly emerged. She had accepted the offer, but when they had departed that day it was as if someone above were angry.. very angry.
A storm blew in, lashing at the trees with a savage ferocity that was so unruly, that no creature had even tried to leave safe shelter. Battering torrents of rain had whipped the ground. Jagged claws of lightning had sliced through the sky, snarling viciously as if burned all in it's path.
But now... now the sun pried open the clouds with gentle hands. And not the fog, nor the rain, nor anything else would stop him from meeting up with this extraordinary female right now. Riley pushed himself to his paws, his tail wagging slowly in anticipation. 'Today might be the day,' he thought to himself, swelling with excitement. 'The day that we set out on a new adventure. Throw caution to the wind and dare to fly. Today, we might be going home.'
It was then that a silken, white coat slipped into the clearing from the shadows, shining as brilliantly as the sun.

"Hello Kitty." Riley said softly, smiling even wider (if that was at all possible) at the sight of her. His silver coat rippled in the fierce white light as he stepped forward to greet her properly. Timidly, and on a sudden whim, he stopped just before her and lifted his head to touch his nose to hers softly. But only for a moment before drawing back again and seating himself comfortably in front of her. It was a polite, yet special kind of greeting. Riley didn't often approach others like that. "I'm glad to see you're okay, that was a pretty crazy storm. I was worried about you.." His fluffy tail curled around his paws slowly, as he sat erect trying to think of how to say his next words. "So.. are we leaving today?"

Kitty walked through the forest her tail was high and her spirits soared, though she felt lonely and all that she managed to always look on the bright side of things. It was dank and dark, very foreboding, but that didn't get her down. She sat down under some ferns and waited for the sun she wished for ever so badly. Sun peaked out and the exploded a bird sang a beautiful song. She walked out and picked something up. Kitty felt her heart skip a beat and the wind was blown right out of her. He was here...
By now you'd know that

Kitty searched frantically for him, she was determined. She was sad that they were separated. A storm hit with fury and she got scared and his under a fallen tree and watched his face dissapear and it crushed her. She remembered how the lightning flashed and the thunder cracked, she remember thee sound of trees falling from getting stuck by the furious light. She remembered the rain stinging her skin like needles and the wind lashing it's full fury on them. She hid that night, she his and sobbed. Her soft golden hues searched for him, his happy face smiling and his dark golden eyes, for his grey patched and his sweet voice. She remembered when she first met him when they ran through the forest like kits so happy and carefree, she remembered him offering to take her home. She smiled her eyes light up at such pleasant memories.
"Hello Kitty. I'm glad to see you're okay, that was a pretty crazy storm. I was worried about you.."

She blinked and stared and she she smiled bigger than she thought possible "Hi Riley" She said the exasperation was obviously there "Yea it was insane, It was rather lonely with out you" She said softly. She sat down wrapping her tail around her legs and she tilted her head. His nose touched hers and she felt herself warm, she crossed her eyes to look at the two black noses and then looked back at him as he pulled back, She gave him the fox version of a hug, like a nuzzle, only a bit different. She sat back down and listened He asked if they were leaving today. She giggled "If you think you can put up with me that long" she teased. Kitty

Kitty sat up and poked him with her paw and then she giggled "hehe you're it" She smiled, she was just happy he was here, the tag was just because she could.

Kitty hugged him, and his fur stood on end. Not from fear, but from a shiver that ran up his spine, as if a spark were ignited by her touch. He sat and watched her, a huge grin widening on her features. His heart swelled at the sight. 'Such a beautiful girl..' he thought dreamily, snapping out of it when he realized that he must have had a stupid, silly look on his face. A tingle of embarrassment shot by underneath his skin, but there was something odd about it. It wasn't that he was embarrassed from her catching him staring, it was that he wanted to look calm and cool in front of her. He wanted to impress her. He wanted to blow her away. And while Riley knew that an extraordinary fox like her wouldn't care about anything like that, he still longed to see that look of awe on her face. And suddenly, a light dawned within his mind. She meant a lot to him.

And not like anyone had meant 'a lot' to him. This was different. Something new, that he couldn't place. While he hadn't had many friends, and never a best friend, he still knew it was something more. "It was rather lonely without you.." Riley's smile faltered a little, and his heart twinged. She had been sad without him. He didn't want her to be sad. He remembered his promise. "...I would protect you, I promise.." Riley looked at his paws, shame heating his face. "I'm sorry I couldn't find you when the storm hit," he whispered, "I promised to protect you, and I didn't mean that only for our journey. I should have been there, but I wasn't. I will do better than that from now on, I promise. If you are ever near danger, I will be beside you to help you." He looked back up at her face, cracking a slight smile at her second comment. "Put up with you? Oh, give me a break. It's a privilege just to be speaking with you. I feel like I failed..."

She looked like she was about to say something, to interrupt and say that he hadn't failed her at all. That she knew he had tried. But there was more he wanted to tell her first.
"Before you say anything, you should know that I feel like I'm constantly imperfect. You mean a lot to me Kitty, and I don't want to do you wrong. I don't want you to get hurt because I wasn't good enough. Nothing I can do for you will be perfect, but I will try my best." He paused, feeling somehow like this had come out wrong. Like his confidence was low, like he was sad about trying to protect her. Riley didn't want her to think that, so he added as a last thought, "I hope my best is enough to make you happy. I just don't want you to be unhappy when we go home..." He trailed off, not brave enough to say how he wanted her to radiate joy, and glow with the beauty of her contentment.
He was not quite brave enough to say that he was in love with her.

life's waiting to begin
Not yet anyways. Maybe once he got to know her better. Oh yes, he knew now. He had identified this feeling. Love. Strange and frightening as it was, it had a kind of rush with it. It made Riley feel alive. But he couldn't tell Kitty this. Once they were on their way, he would do more than tell her. He would show her. Slowly, she would see. And then, only once she could see it with her own two eyes, would he say that cliche three word phrase.
If he didn't chicken out.
Riley snapped back to reality as Kitty poked him with a sly smirk."Hehe. You're it!" Riley's eyes glistened with mischief as he looked back at her with a serious face and uttered in soft tones, "No. You're it." Maybe she would notice, maybe she wouldn't. But by this statement, Riley was talking about a lot more than tag.

She just would have to keep in mind that if something happens like that again she would have someone to protect her, and that she had someone to talk to. She was better now despite the fact she hadn't seen Shomari in a while or any f her other friends, but he came back for her, and thats what let her know that there were others who cared, it it was nice. Kitty soft ears laid down when he said he said he felt like he failed She looked him square in the eye "You did what you could, be thankful for that" She told him, as long as he never gave up that was good enough for her.

She smiled "I don't think anyone can be unhappy around you, your full of surprises" She told him, and Kitty herself was generally a happy fox. She could see something different in his eyes, but couldn't pin point it, but she knew it was nothing to worry about, she knew sooner or later she would find out. He looked back up with a serious face, not like 'I have bad news' serious like ' I have something to say' serious

He hadn't tagged her, so she knew he had to be talking about something else. Kitty thought about it, she had to think about the statement a little more to understand it, she slowly pieced it together but she wasn't sure if she wanted to believe it. She was lost for words so she just smiled at him. In truth she knew the feeling, one that usually frightened her, why? Because if something was to happen to one of them, the other would be in a great deal of pain, and if something happened to her and he was the one in pain, Kitty couldn't imagine that.
So hear this please

Kitty knew she would get used to it and embrace it, the more she thought about it actually, the more she looked forward to the journey. She would stay with him this time and not hide, she didn't want him to be alone again, if she wasn't around Riley she would be worried and she herself would be alone, and she didn't want that. Kitty had nothing to say, she was wishing for something, but got nothing. It was all like a head rush everything happened all fast and unexpected, but always at the right time, it was really weird. All in all it was like a roller coaster, so fast and and it gave you a head rush.

Kitty had to say something anything! "Uhh Do you wanna get going?" She asked obviously as she was dragging herself away from her thoughts, besides everything usually seemed to go a little more smoothly as one walked and talked, even if they didn't talk she was fine as long as he was around, as long as they had each other, she was fine.
