overall personality.
Perseus, being a Spotted Moray Eel, is really a very ugly creature. His ugly pointed jaws and demonic yellow eyes remind other creatures of a terrible sea monster. He doesn't see himself as beautiful in any way, and loves watching things that are beautiful. Watching the waves push the seaweed back and forth, and the glittering of schools of tiny, silver fish are things that he truly enjoys, and envies because he can never have that magic himself.
He believes that his ugliness discourages all creatures from speaking to him. Percy's jaws gape wide as he emerges from his den to breathe deeply through his mouth and gills, and anything that sees his face quickly flees. He is sad and lonely, and some faint hope sparkles in the back of his mind that he might one day have someone that would call him friend. Perseus, while not exactly the pessimist, does believe that he won't ever find a mate. This is something that not only makes him afraid, but makes him very depressed and grumpy.
Perce has become bitter because of his previous encounter with another moray eel. He will not go near anything of his species because he fears them, but this breaks his heart because he longs for love. Sometimes he can be harsh and mean, but immediately regrets it because it only drives away company all the more. Life is boring when all you do is live in a hole, and eat shrimp. He wants his life to mean more than that, but he is so afraid to go out and make it happen...

past.
Perseus remembers nothing of his family. He began life as an egg, floating on an ocean current, as all moray eels do. When he hatched, he found he was anchored between two jutting chunks of coral. As he grew bigger, he became very afraid for his safety. The larger he was, the easier a shark could spot his dark brown spots. A primitive need for safety rippled under his skin, and the days passed by as he looked for a good place to stay. He was vulnerable.
Finally, he found a safe haven: a large patch of coral, with a promising den going back into a long, twisting crevice. He fit just perfectly, and wriggled into it, leaving enough space to withdraw his head when he needed. He didn't realize, however, that he would grow to be a lot larger than he already was. A two foot burrow was not big enough. Soon he had no more room to withdraw his head, and it emerged further and further from the hole each day. Like bait being lowered into the water, soon an enemy saw him. Clamping strong jaws onto his muscular body, another moray decided he looked like a promising meal.
Percy thrashed in terror, smacking the other eel in his frenzy. Luckily, this startled the other long enough to make him release his grip a little. Percy squirmed away, and fled as fast as he could. Blood streamed into the water, and he knew this was very dangerous if a shark were around. It took him only two hours to find his next home, probably because his desperation cause him to focus more. There he has stayed his entire life: in a larger patch of coral.
